Happy New Year? Traditionally we start the new year with resolutions to bring change to our lives, usually an attempt to start new ‘good habits’. Out with the old and in with the new!
But for us Christians, our story is over two thousand years old and our desires are to cling closer to the old habits that Jesus gave us. To miss-quote Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, ‘It’s a story old as time’. God’s love for us is from everlasting to everlasting.
While the media will be filled with ideas for self-improvement, each one less attainable than the next. It can be too tempting to think that if we attain this or that then our lives will finally be ‘good’ and we’ll be happy.
Putting our trust, welfare and happiness in material things is unsatisfying. Instead, as Christians, we have something so much better to rest on. The eternal love of God.
In him, we know we are ‘fearfully and wonderfully made’ (Ps 139.14), made in his image (Gen 1.27), our name is written on the palm of his hand (Is 49.16) and loved with an everlasting love (Jer 31.3).
So as we start a new year, it may be a better resolution to get to know God’s word a bit better, that way we can know just how much he loves us, just as we are. Our Bible Course starts on Monday 5th January at 7pm in St Peter’s and St Paul’s, and runs fortnightly. Resolving to attend might just be the best self-help decision you make!
Every blessing
